⁣Every autumn, Elm becomes one of the best places in Switzerland to experience Alpine food culture at its source. The Glarner Alpchäs- und Schabziger-Märt brings together cheesemakers from the surrounding mountain pastures, where summer grazing gives Alpine cheese its rich, herb-fed character. Alongside the region's protected Glarner Alp cheese AOP, you'll find Schabziger, the distinctive clover-spiced green cheese that has defined Glarus for centuries.

The festival belongs as much to the landscape as it does to the food. Elm's historic streets, recognized with the Wakker Prize, sit beneath forests that turn brilliant shades of gold and crimson. Apple orchards fill the valley with fresh cider, baked pastries, and the unmistakable scent of harvest. I think this is Switzerland at its most authentic—less polished than the postcard destinations and far more memorable.

Life in the Sernftal Valley still follows the rhythm of the seasons. Family farms sell cheeses made from summer milk, fresh bread, berry preserves, and pumpkins gathered from nearby fields. Nothing feels staged because very little is.

The Alpabzug is the festival's defining tradition. Decorated cows descend from the high pastures wearing flower crowns and polished brass bells, led by the Kranzkuh in ceremonial dress. Alphorns, yodeling, and local folk music turn the procession into a celebration of work completed rather than a performance for visitors.

Food is reason enough to stay. Raclette melts over potatoes, rösti arrives crisp from the pan, and local wine warms the evening while artisans sell carved woodwork, wool goods, and handmade crafts. The annual cheese competition settles one argument and starts a dozen more.

This journey through Elm captures the flavors, traditions, and mountain landscapes that make the Glarus Alps unlike anywhere else in Switzerland.
