Fanjingshan: China's Real-Life "City in the Sky"
Fanjingshan doesn't look like it belongs on Earth. Rising from an isolated rock pillar more than 2,300 meters above sea level in Guizhou, China, it feels less like a mountain and more like a fortress built above the clouds.
This journey starts at the East Gate cable car and climbs all the way to Old Golden Summit (老金顶, 2,494m), then continues up the near-vertical iron-chain ladders leading to the Red Clouds Golden Summit (红云金顶). The climb is demanding, but that's exactly what makes the summit feel earned.
You'll also pass the famous Mushroom Stone and cross the narrow bridge suspended between two cliff peaks. That's the moment everyone remembers, and for good reason.
Fanjingshan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the designation isn't what makes it remarkable. The mountain earns that reputation the moment you're standing on the rock, surrounded by nothing but sky.
